And just like that. . . spring has sprung!
The time has come, my friends, for sundresses, rain boots and (if you’re a graduating senior like me) lots and lots and LOTS of little luncheons and painfully awkward celebrations. OH, and one rather large ceremony in exactly 45 days, 2 hours and 52 minutes. But hey, who’s counting? (Me).
If you are looking for some tips on what to wear to a special brunch or generally any event that makes you cringe at the thought of wearing your 8th grade awards banquet fit-and-flare dress AGAIN, I’ve got you covered. Keep reading for some suggestions on how to keep it classy without looking like you stepped right out of the Banana Republic Extra 40% Off Sale. (Guilty).
BUILDING YOUR ARSENAL OF LOOKS
1. Denim will always be your best friend. Check out sites like ZARA and ASOS for some denim updates. Denim comes in all forms these days. Dresses, skirts, crop flares and layering shirts can all be dressed up or down, so start here if you are unsure what the event’s dress code calls for.
2. Find your “go-to.” I think we all need one ride-or-die look that has us feeling confident and polished without thought. For me, this is always a jumpsuit (here & here). I have probably worn a jumpsuit to 70% of my formal outings this year, so I know it’s always there for me when I’m feeling uninspired by the other looks in my closet.
3. Comfort is key. This almost goes alongside tip #2. Essentially, know what looks you feel most comfortable in. I am a pants-girl, so that’s wear I tend to lean. But if you love dresses or skirts, work. it. girl. friend.
4. Save now, spend elsewhere. You shouldn’t have to fork over tons of money just because it’s brunching season. Save that cash for the over-priced avocado toast. Places like Boohoo.com (extra 50% off with code YAY50 – you’re welcome), H&M and Forever21 offer tons of on-trend pieces to amp up your basic staples. If you can stand the obnoxious music and angsty teenagers, I recommend going into F21. They have some hidden gems, but I always like to check out the quality and feel of the garment before I hop in the checkout line. Saving money doesn’t have to mean cheaping-out. Some items like ruffled blouses and a-line skirts will stand the test of time (for a season or two, until the new trends start rolling in).
