These days, it seems every store I walk into has received a sort of “blast from the past.” Today’s designers are obviously taking hints from the styles that influenced generations that came before us. I like the idea that wearing a vintage-inspired silhouette has the power to remind people of the past. It’s funny how little fashion is discussed in our history classes. Sure there are much more pressing items to be taught, but I would argue that fashion is one of the very few ways we are able to connect to -and almost experience- the past. Take this romper I’m wearing for example. Separately, the patterns scream “Grandpa’s favorite shirt from 70’s,” yet when combined they create a playfully modern look. This is where the genius of fashion lies. It’s in the ability to take something that may seem ordinary or out-dated and turn it into something that sparks emotion. I realize this might be a little bit of a deep talk about clothing, but the evolution of fashion truly is a fascinating subject in my eyes.
As Queen Bey tells us all, “What goes around comes back around (hey my baby).”
So have a little fun experimenting with styles from the past. Heck! Why not take your mom or grandma shopping and see what modern styles remind them of the decades that have passed?
