So you were obsessed with the Royal Wedding. . . Now what?
When the Duke and Duchess of Sussex left the building a few weeks ago, so did our chances of experiencing an equally epic Royal Wedding for at least 20 years. So if you’re anything like me, you might have experienced some second-hand post-wedding blues. Luckily for you, I’ve rounded up three shows that’ll give you all the monarchy and aristocracy feels your heart desires. [korra_icon icon=”smile”]
Now, before you roll your eyes at me, these shows are also just epic accounts of powerful women in history. Well, the first two are. And the third will make you ever so grateful to live your casual non-aristocratic life. Keep scrolling and grab a cuppa tea – it’s about to get very docu-drama up in here. . .
The Crown
After its Netflix debut in November of 2016, The Crown has become quite the household name. If you haven’t watched this show, someone you know probably has. And they probably love it for one of two reasons. 1. Corgis. 2. Drama.
This show is sure to provide both. Beginning in the 1940’s, The Crown centers around Elizabeth II’s life as she came into her role as monarch. Don’t worry, it is nothing like a documentary and basically gives you a front-row seat in the life of one of the most powerful females on earth. Come on, you know you want to be BFFs with the Queen’s corgis. WATCH THIS SHOW!!
Victoria
I’ll admit it, I have always been a terrible history student. My mind is by no means chronological. BUT for some reason, every single one of my favorite shows has some historical element. Take Victoria, for example. Did I previously know every detail about this female monarch’s reign? NO. I didn’t even know what century she belonged to. But do I now know she had nine children, a passionate love story with her. . .cousin (a recurring theme in all monarchs it seems. . .you get used to it), and managed to hold a rather important full-time job? Yes, yes I do know that. You should, too. Watch the first season on Amazon Prime.
Downton Abbey
Why yes, Maggie Smith. I’m afraid it will end in tears . . .and laughter, screaming, heartbreak, unbearable joy, anger, and every other emotion one might cycle through during a rather vigorous moment of PMS (kidding). Downton Abbey only recently came into my life. For years I avoided it, favoring the “juicier” likes of Gossip Girl and The Vampire Diaries. I’m cringing too, it’s okay. Still, I’ve officially hopped on the Downton trolly and never want to come back.
There are no royal crowns in this series, but it does highlight the lives of British aristocrats in the mid-20th century. Still, I’m not sure I have ever felt so emotionally attached to characters on the screen.
