THE ROAD TO STYLE SUCCESS
My personal style has gone through many edits over the years. I became “conscious” of my style choices sometime during fifth grade when, with the best intentions, I began pairing various combinations of neon Converse and patterned knee-high socks with my khaki shorts from Old Navy.
In 6th grade, I found myself very much on-brand with Ellen Degeneres: cardigans, chinos, and the occasional polo tee. From there, things took a spin toward a more traditionally “girly” and (according to a snobbish teacher at my school) “too grown up” wardrobe. I wore heels and sundresses at every given chance, and worshipped the style section of Seventeen magazine. Thus began my days of over-dressing.
High school saw me in lots of stripes, some florals, but mostly turtle necks. I broke up with skinny jeans (thank goodness) and discovered a necessary love for sneakers.
And that brings me to present-day, about a decade deep in my personal style evolution.
THE NOT-SO-SUBTLE ART OF NOT GIVING A ****
To sum up my current dressing tendencies:
I pretty commonly hear the phrase, “I don’t know how you’re pulling that off right now.”
I’m flattered by this, of course. But I also hate to think that people are living their everyday lives not wearing whatever the heck they want because they think they “won’t pull it off.”
So friends, here is my ultimate #1, life-changing style hack.
Wear what makes you happy. Not what makes you skinny, curvy, tan, polished, professional, casual, or whatever. I started an absolute knee-high sock movement in fifth grade by wearing something that made me feel pure joy. Do the same, and watch how your personal style comes to life.
