Makeup
Face
1. Always start by priming your face (after applying sunscreen if you’ll be outside). It can make the difference between a beautiful summertime glow and a full-on oil fest. I like this one by Smashbox because it reduces the redness in skin that can tend to appear in the warmer months.
2. For glowing under-eyes, try this concealer by Benefit. It is incredibly moisturizing and blends wonderfully. 3. My friend Sarah (pictured) prefers to go for a natural makeup look, so her mineral concealer/miracle worker by bareMinerals is perfect for summer because it won’t slide off her face AND it has SPF 20. 4. We stuck with the mineral makeup to add some natural warmth to Sarah’s skin by using bareMineral’s Faux Tan All-Over Face Color. 5. Sarah and I both use this uber-soft blush brush by Eco Tools to apply bronzer. I also use it to pack power on my t-zone. It’s super great quality for the price. |
Eyes
1. A bronze cream eyeshadow is a must for summer. It instantly warms up your eyes, but still looks super natural and pretty. Try to find one with some staying power if you don’t want to set it with another eyeshadow. Maybelline’s Color Tattoo in Bad to the Bronze stays put all day… and sometimes even through my shower.
2. Apply a light brown shade to your crease. I used Chinchilla from Too Faced which has warm undertones to play up the bronze look we were going for. (HINT: You can also use your bronzer from before!)
3. THIS IS A GAME CHANGER… To highlight your eyes, apply a gold eyeliner to your upper lashline. This subtle sparkly color adds so much glow to the eyes. Here, we used one by Urban Decay because it is waterproof, which is a total plus in the summer. Seriously though, gold eyeliner…try it!
4. Brows. Brows. Brows. Incredibly important, incredibly neglected. There are many ways to shape, define, and fill in your brows, but one of the most natural and easiest ways is to simply apply a brow moose or gel. I use this one by Benefit everyday. It is not waterproof, so using a wax based pencil to lightly fill in your brows might work better if you plan on being in the water all day.
5. Last, but not least, mascara. Honestly, I’m never too blown away by any one particular waterproof mascara, but I’ve been using Lights, Camera, Splashes by Tarte, and I am actually pretty impressed. My only complaint is that it tends to get on my eyelid while I am applying it, but that is most likely just me being lazy…

Hair
Free People Hair Chalk
1. For Sarah, I started out by applying a hair oil to moisturize her ends before applying the chalk which is very drying to say the least. I used my favorite Macadamia Healing Oil Treatment for this. 2. To apply, I wet each strand of hair then ran the chalk along the tips of her hair. If you are blonde and want to avoid staining, DO NOT wet your hair… it will work well on light-colored dry hair as well. 3. Play around with colors! I did an ombre effect on some strands, while I left others one solid color. 4. Finally, set your hair with heat if you want it to last. I used a 1 inch curling wand that created tight curls, then Sarah slept on it and they loosened up to very natural, beachy waves. If you need more texture, try using a pomade or sea-salt spray. |
